Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes or "Aguirre, The Wrath Of God" which is the English title is a West German adventure, biography film written and directed by Werner Herzog, and starring Klaus Kinski.
The movie follows a group of Spanish in the 16th century, they are on a expedition in search for El Dorado. The expedition is lead by the ruthless and insane Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski).
I first thought this film was based on the book "Hearts of Darkness". But I learned that it is only loosely based on the historical figure Aguirre, and that some of the people and situations may be inspired by the Spanish Dominican missionary Gaspar de Carvajal. But other than that it is completely made out of Werner Herzog´s fantasy. I really love Herzog´s movies, the way he is using very little dialogue and a minimalistic story line, makes it really weird. When I am watching movies of Werner Herzog its like I will just sit there and can´t take my eyes away. Klaus Kinski is also a really talented actor, and his insanity really makes the movie worth it. This is a great movie for avant-garde movie fans!
It gets a 9 out of 10 from me!
