Lost Highway is a mystery/psychological thriller neo-noir movie directed by David Lynch and co-written by David Lynch and Barry Gifford.
Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) is a jazz musician, he lives with his wife Renee Madison (Patricia Arquette). One day he gets a weird message on the house intercom, "Dick Laurent is dead". They also starts getting this VHS tapes on the porch which shows someone filming them while they are sleeping. Fred Madison seems to slip in and out of reality, and ends up brutally murdering his wife. As he is put in jail for the murder, he suddenly becomes another person called Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). As this is not the man who they arrested, they have to let him go, and the movie completely change direction and story.
This is one of my all time favorite movies, it is also a movie which might be very difficult to understand. As David Lynch was working on this movie he was very "Obsessed" with the O.J. Simpson trial. Lynch was struck by how O.J. acted, that he was able to laugh and smile and go golfing, and be seemingly acting as he had no problems, and everything was as normal. They found the psychology term psychogenic fugue, where a person is exposed to allot of stress, they become another person in their minds. They find new names and a new personality and they totally suppress their real memories and makes up a new reality. That is kind of what this movie is based on. I am a very big fan of David Lynch´s work, he is a mastermind of making movies, and this is one of his best ones. The atmosphere is dark and gloomy, the music really amplifier atmosphere. The story is so good, not just what is shown on the screen, but all the psychological stuff behind it. It is so unbelievable that he can make some thing this bizarre, and do not make it just stupid, or just boring. This is a masterpiece in my eyes.
I strongly recommend this film. Of course if you like easily watched movies it is not for you, cause it is a movie that you have to use your mind a little to watch, and might have to watch a couple of times to like and understand.
