It is written by Tobe hooper and Kim Henkel. When it was released it was banned in several countries and many theaters stopped showing it, because of complaints for its violent content.
The movie is slightly inspired by the crimes of real life serial killer Edward Theodore Gein "Ed Gein". Some people did believe that the Texas Chainsaw story was true, but that is not the case.
This movie made its way into horror movie history, and may be one of the best Slasher movies ever made.
The Texas Chainsaw massacre is the story of the siblings Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) and her brother Franlkin Hardesy (Paul A. Partain). They go on a road trip together with their three friends Jerry (Allen Danziger), Kirk (William Vail), and Pam (Teri McMinn), to visit their grandfather to investigate vandalism and grave robbing at his grave.
It opens with a reporter talking about the grave robbing, and the creepy sound of a old camera taking photos, and flashes of a rotting corpse.
The five friends are traveling in their van, and Franklin which is in a wheel chair, has to stop and take a piss. When a big trailer runs by them, Franklin's wheel chair gets thrown out into the ditch from the wind from the trailer.
They travels on to the graveyard, where they meet a bunch of rednecks telling them how to get to the grave. Franklin see a alcoholic old man lying rambling about how things happens there that people do not talk about.
The friends decides to take the trip to the old Hardesty homestead, but on the way they are met by a reaching smell. They quickly find out that the smell comes from a slaughterhouse nearby. Franklin starts talking about how their uncle used to work in one of the slaughterhouses, and how they used to kill the cows with a sledgehammer, and how they don't use it anymore. They use a bolt gun to kill the cows now days.
Suddenly they see a hitchhiker (Edwin Neal). The hitchhiker is a really weirdo, he is talking about how his family has always worked in the slaughterhouse, and how the old way of killing cows with a sledgehammer is better than the new way of killing them. He also talks about headcheese and all kinds of crap.
When the hitchhiker takes a photo of Franklin and demands to get money for the picture, which Franklin refuses, he gets upset and cuts Franklins arm with a razor blade.
The friends chuck out the maniac and goes on to a gas station to fill gas, before going on the the old Hardesty house. They ask one of the workers for gas, but he tells them there is no gas left at the gas station. They also ask for directions to the old house. But the worker warns them about going there, because its no good idea to go "mess around in an old house".
When they get to the house nothing is quite as it should. The house is vandalised, and there is what seems like animal bones and voodoo shit all over the place. Kirk and Pam, decides to go for a bath in the old lake, only to find out that there is no longer any water there. They hear a motor sound, and Kirk says to Pam they should go there to the farm and ask for some gasoline. But this is the dumbest thing they would do.
After this the hell starts, and they all get kidnaped and killed by a family of crazy cannibals.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre really is an awesome movie, Hooper produced the film for for less than 300,000 dollars. Hooper used mostly unknown actors from central Texas where the movie is filmed. Hooper had to use as little time as possible to make the movie, because of the low budget. But still the movie has been referred to as one of the best movies in horror cinema history.
The character Leatherface is inspired by the real life serial killer Ed Gein as mentioned before, and the actor Gunnar Hansen who plays Leatherface took inspiration from special needs children, to make Leatherface seem like a mentally disturbed creature.
I really like this movie, because of its awesome story, and some scenes that probably was really disturbing when it was released in the 70s.
The plot about a psycho cannibal family is just so good, And Hooper managed to make this a really good movie.
Leatherface using a chainsaw as a murder weapon makes it really disturbing and violent, even though the movie is not as disturbing in the year 2017.
But I really love this movie, and it is a movie that I never get sick of.
Some songs from the soundtrack are "Fool For A Blonde" by Roger Bartlett, and "Daddy's Sick Again" by Arkey Blue
This movie get the score 9 out of 10 from me.
