Lost River (2014)

Lost River is an American fantasy neo-noir film, and is the first movie written and directed by Ryan Gosling. The single mother Billy (Christina Hendricks) lives in a rundown Detroit neighborhood with her two sons Bones (Iain De Caestecker) and his younger brother Franky. Bones is getting money by stealing copper from old buildings and selling it, something that seems to get harder and harder since a vicious criminal called Bully (Matt Smith) claims to own the city, and all the copper in it. Billy is struggling to pay back a loan that she took to keep their house, which was originally belonged to her grandmothers. The banker Dave (Ben Mendelsohn) offers Billy a job, this job will lead her to a dark underworld of the city. Now this is another great movie that I recently watched.

I was kind of surprised that Ryan Gosling would make a movie like this, but it is clearly that Gosling has taken inspiration from people that he have worked with, the movie has some similarities to "Only God Forgives" by Nicolas Winding Refn. Also to me it has a kind of David Lynch feel to it as well as Harmony Korine or Larry Clark. Anyway I really enjoyed this movie, Ryan Gosling sure managed to make a great film, it has beautiful images that sucks you right into the story, it is very artistic and mystical. It also has some great grotesque scenes at the underground bar/club that seems to play on some "Violence fetish", weird circus acts, and of course some singing. This was a great film, loved the atmosphere, and the weirdness! Great! 8 out of 10.
