Mea Maxima Culpa is an American documentary written and directed by Alex Gibney. The title "Mea Maxima Culpa" is taken from the Latin phrase which translates to "Through my most grievous fault". The phrase is taken from the Confiteor which is a part of the Catholic Mass, where sinners acknowledge their failings and sins before God. Confiteor translates to "I confess".
Alex Gibney goes deep into the underworld and secrets of the Catholic Church world. He explores the issues of pedophilia in the Churches. He is following the trail from the first protest against sexually abuse in the United states, and all the way to the Vatican.
This movie was nominated for 6 Primetime Emmy Awards, and won in 3 categories. It is a very powerful, disturbing, and sad story. About Priests like Father Lawrence Murphy, who was a Priest at a Catholic School for deaf kids, where he sexually abused several children, and some of the victims trying to stand up to him and get him taken away from the church. I know there has been allot of scandals with Priests sexually abusing kids, but I was shocked and surprised of how many cases there were! It is sickening how Priest, which is someone high in the Catholic world, and people are suppose to trust, can take advantage of young children, who can not refuse, and are to scared or unable to tell it to anyone. Also how the Vatican knows about every single incident, and is doing nothing but trying to cover it up. It is truly disturbing and sickening. It was a great documentary about a fucked up, taboo, and perverted subject. I do recommend that people do see this documentary.
8 out of 10.
